We all know how important it is to get a good night’s sleep, but did you know Wool helps us sleep?
When we are tired, life can be sluggish and we can become stressed more easily. Throughout history wool has been used to keep us warm. In fact keeping humans warm was the primary reason sheep became so important as far back as 4000 BC. (See Blog – The Wool Effect).
Wool insulates naturally and keeps the body temperature at a comfortable level at night. So even if its freezing or temperatures have soared, wool will balance your body heat. Wool absorbs moisture away from the body and releases it as a vapour into the air so you never feel wet. It’s almost like magic and all you need is a pair of woolen PJs or a woolen bedspread.
The vapour omitted into the air by wool reduces humidity and keeps temperatures cool, thereby eliminating dust mites and making wool bedding perfect for allergy and asthma sufferers. Because wool is naturally fire resistant, sleeping in wool bedding is safer too!
We often complain that we didn’t get good nights sleep. Research has shown that sleep, on or under wool enhances a deeper and longer sleep. This is because of wool’s breathability and moisture management attributes. The micro climate wool creates is so balanced it allows us to breathe with ease and therefore relax into a deep and restorative sleep.
The University of Sydney conducted a 3 year study on the benefits of sleeping in wool PJs. Participants fell asleep faster in wool than in cotton. The study also showed that using a combination of wool PJs and bedding brought about a deeper and longer sleep. Wool’s natural absorption properties stabilized participant’s body temperatures throughout the night and maintained a comfortable room temperature allowing participants to sleep for longer periods and improve their sleep quality.
